i recently went to the doctors to have a blood test he also checked my BP and heart beart on the same day my blood pressure was 120/80 and 78 bmp on my heart
in my blood test it came back all normal except my potassium levels which came back low at 3.1 I decided to read up online what that meant and read some things that have scared me first i noticed a few symptoms i can relate to like muscle twiching but i read you can suffer a heart attack at any moment when its that low and even slip into a coma!! other than that also my cholesterol level is 6.5
anyway i went back to the doctor she said she wouldnt have called me in personally for the potassium levels she said its fine and no danger just that i should obviously lower my cholesterol.

You start by mentioning potassium. As you may have found out in your research, potassium is a mineral (electrolyte) in the body. Almost 98% of potassium is found inside the cells. Small changes in the level of potassium that is present outside the cells can have severe effects on the heart, nerves, and muscles. The normal potassium level is 3.5-5.0 mEq/L. Low potassium is defined as a potassium level below 3.5 mEq/L. The level that you quote is marginally lower than the “normal” and, as your doctor mentioned, not to be too concerned about. It is not likely that the level that you quote would cause any symptoms until it reaches a lower reading. You continue by worrying about cholesterol. If you just listen to the ‘experts’, you would think that cholesterol is an evil substance and that most of us would benefit from lowering our cholesterol as low as possible. But it is not so. Cholesterol is a vitally important substance which is used for building our cell membranes and producing several of our hormones. The natural question arising from this is – Why a natural substance in our blood, with important biological functions, is called “bad” when it is transported from the place of manufacture in the liver to the peripheral tissues by LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein), but is called “good” when it is transported back to the liver, for replenishment or removal, by HDL (High Density Lipoprotein). If our cholesterol level drops too low, we are actually at increased risk for depression and suicide. Low cholesterol levels have been shown to worsen the condition of patients with congestive heart failure. Statin drugs are often prescribed to lower our cholesterol level. These drugs actually inhibit a vital enzyme that manufactures cholesterol in the liver. However the same enzyme is used to manufacture coenzyme Q10, which is a biochemical required to transfer energy from food to our cells. Thus statin drugs inhibit the very important production of coenzyme Q10. It has never been conclusively proved that lowering cholesterol saves lives. Disclaimers from the drug companies about their statin drugs show the side effects are very dangerous. Statins are a class of drugs designed to block the production of cholesterol by the body, with the effect of lowering a patient’s blood cholesterol levels. According to modern medical mythology, the use of these drugs ultimately lowers the patient’s risk for coronary heart disease. These drugs are extremely dangerous. There are huge volumes of reports detailing the horrible and often permanent side effects of taking these drugs. Using the same conventional medical thinking that is being used for cholesterol would lead one to believe that doctors should reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by taking out everybody’s brain. In fact, cholesterol is being transported to tissues as part of an inflammatory response that is occurring there for the purpose of repairing the damage. The fixation on cholesterol as a major cause of heart disease defies the last 15 years of science and deflects from real causes such as the damage (via glycation) that sugars such as glucose and fructose inflict on tissues, including the lining of arteries, causing chronic inflammation and resultant plaque. So it would be wise to stop trying to change cholesterol, studies conclusively prove beyond doubt that cholesterol does not cause heart disease and it will not stop a heart attack. The majority of people who suffer heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels. So, with respect, might I suggest that you try to stop worrying and try to enjoy your life. Research ways to stop panic attacks etc.

i have been having severe anxiety due to my fathers’ death and have been prescribed xanax. Is this safe?
I am not on any prescription meds, don’t drink or smoke eat healthy, am not overweight, etc. My dad died recently, and i have been really stressed out helping take care of my mom. yesterday my blood pressure was 146/94. 150/100, 146/98, etc. according to my mom’s portable home bp machine (my mom checked hers and it was normal according to the machine). i do not have hypertension normally. I went to a dr. (my normal dr. is on vacation) and he prescribed .5 mg of xanax to take twice a day. he did blood tests but said that he though that everything was most likely normal, that my bp was rising because of stress and possible panic atacks. my bp at the drs. office was 116/80. I have been taking the xanax for the past day, but i have read about about it and it is scary to me. the dr. stressed that i really need it, at least for a little while. will this be safe to take until next week when i see my actual dr.? I am hoping that he can prescribe something safer.
If you don’t exceed the prescribed dosage, Xanax is safe and can be really helpful. All medications have potential side effects, and they have to tell you about them, but the percentage of people that get them are so small for most things that you shouldn’t worry too much. Take it for a little a time as possible, just until your doc thinks you’re ok. You sound like a really healthy person and the chances of you having a side effect from it are minute. And also, that’s a very small dose. I think you should be fine to take it, and it might help you alot. I’ve taken it before myself, and it helped, and I was fine.

I am on both medications. I was having extreme muscle pains which I finally figured out was from the Cholesterol medication.

You need to try to convince your parents to keep you on if they have it through work. Even if you have to pay them, it is worth it. I understand where you are coming from. Know that if you can’t get it through your parents, you will probably need to try to get on medicaid or a similar state program. Do not even waste your time applying for private health insurance. There is no way they will take you.

Many countries that subscribe to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have committed to ensuring access to basic health services for their citizens. Health insurance has been considered and promoted as the major financing mechanism to improve access to health services, as well to provide financial risk protection. In Africa, several countries have already spent scarce time, money, and effort on health insurance initiatives. Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Tanzania are just a few of them. However, many of these schemes, both public and private, cover only a small proportion of the population, with the poor less likely to be covered. In fact, unless carefully designed to be pro-poor, health insurance can widen inequity as higher income groups are more likely to be insured and use health care services, taking advantage of their insurance coverage. Despite the many benefits that health insurance may offer, table 1.1 shows that the journey to implement insurance and achieve the benefits is challenging, long, and risky. Policy makers and technicians that support development and scale-up of health insurance must figure out how to increase their country``s financing capacity, extend health insurance coverage to the hard-to-reach populations, expand benefits packages, and improve the performance of existing schemes.

Is there a correlation between sleep apnea and bradycardia?
Yes there is. I have tachycardia and bradycardia and the cardiologist recommended getting tested for sleep apnea (I know I have it) and getting the CPAP machine.
Often I would doze off feeling fine and wake up after 60 seconds or so having an episode of bradycardia. Mine was controlled with medication.

High blood pressure bad? but exercising gives high blood pressure?
everywhere it says high blood pressure is bad. But during exercise, the blood pressure goes up. So if one exercises for say 1 hour. That means 1 hour of high blood pressure. isn’t that bad?
I am confused. Health experts say high blood pressure is bad. But what about during exercise? it does go up. So exercising is bad?
your blood pressure goes up when you exercise b/c your heart beats faster, forcing more blood into your arteries. this is a compensatory mechanism to counteract the fact that your muscles need more blood to supply themselves with oxygen. exercising, needing more oxygen, pumping more blood, increasing your blood pressure during exercise all result in more arteries developing around your heart. these are called coronary arteries. anywho, the more you have, the less damage is done if you ever have a heart attack. exercising is VERY good for you. within 15 – 30 minutes of exercising, your blood pressure will fall again. this is because everything is working the way it is supposed to.
having high blood pressure, aside from exercising, is a pathologic condition. this is not the same thing as the raised blood pressure during exercise. many factors (stress, nicotine, alcohol, high blood fat content, sedentary lifestyle, poorly controlled blood sugars, etc.) contribute to increase blood pressure. it is a multifactorial situation when youre talking about pathologic raised blood pressure. and blood pressure isnt in itself harmful unless it goes really really high, like 200/110 or so. this could never happen during routine exercise.
