I just took my blood sugar and it’s 276 I know thats high, but i’m not feeling any symptoms of it being high. Is this a dangerous to have a number that high what should I do? (I’ve been eating alright)

Sounds like you DB is not under control. Even a blood sugar taken 2 hours after a meal should not be that high…You may not feel symptoms of hyperglycemia because your body is used to levels that high and it would be a lot higher before you felt differently…You need to check you blood sugars at least 4 times a day, starting with a fasting blood sugar first thing in the morning, then 2 hours after every meal and at bedtime. If your doctor can’t control you with the pills, he may have to start insulin. Go see your doc and follow the dietary calories that were ordered for you….

everywhere it says high blood pressure is bad. But during exercise, the blood pressure goes up. So if one exercises for say 1 hour. That means 1 hour of high blood pressure. isn’t that bad?

your blood pressure goes up when you exercise b/c your heart beats faster, forcing more blood into your arteries. this is a compensatory mechanism to counteract the fact that your muscles need more blood to supply themselves with oxygen. exercising, needing more oxygen, pumping more blood, increasing your blood pressure during exercise all result in more arteries developing around your heart. these are called coronary arteries. anywho, the more you have, the less damage is done if you ever have a heart attack. exercising is VERY good for you. within 15 – 30 minutes of exercising, your blood pressure will fall again. this is because everything is working the way it is supposed to.

having high blood pressure, aside from exercising, is a pathologic condition. this is not the same thing as the raised blood pressure during exercise. many factors (stress, nicotine, alcohol, high blood fat content, sedentary lifestyle, poorly controlled blood sugars, etc.) contribute to increase blood pressure. it is a multifactorial situation when youre talking about pathologic raised blood pressure. and blood pressure isnt in itself harmful unless it goes really really high, like 200/110 or so. this could never happen during routine exercise.

Diabetes: Is low really worse than high?

I thought a diabetic coma was different to a hypoglycaemic coma, but today I was informed they are the same – low blood sugar. In my first aid training I was told if we aren’t sure if a diabetic is low or high, give them sugar, because it won’t hurt them to be high.

High blood sugar really isn’t a problem the way low blood sugar is. Low blood sugar is a more common emergency because you only have to drop below 60 (normal is 70-120) to have symptoms. Below 50 and you’re in trouble, any lower than that and you’re probably unconcious. There is also something that diabetics experience called Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) which is a life threatning condition. This is how most diabetics are dignosed.. they end up in the ER with DKA. DKA occurs because diabetics cannot utilize their blood sugar, which is what most cells use for energy. Since they can’t use glucose the body breaks down protein and fat which produces ketones that build up in the blood and cause problems. So, what do you do if you find a diabetic passed out… your training is correct, give them sugar. It won’t hurt someone with DKA to get more sugar because that’s not the issue. But if you fail to give someone who’s hypoglycemic sugar they could die.
The problem with high blood sugar is that it does long term damage. All those complications you hear about with diabetes, (foot ulcers, blindness, neuropathy, renal failure) are a result of high blood sugar. That’s why diabetes needs to be controlled.

Two of my very dear friends live in a Filthy house. They even have wild racoons living in the house.?

They both have respiratory problems, diabetes, and heart problems.

Ideally, the first thing would be to try and find someone to go talk to them.

I’d try going to your local Department of Mental Health, or some other organization that offers help and counseling, and asking what they suggest. They may be able to give you the name of someone who can go talk to them, and help them get the house cleaned up as well as help them get any medications they may need.

Helping clean yourself is good, but it shouldn’t be your only solution. When things like that start happening, there is something else at the core-it’s not just being messy or not minding animals.

Calling the health department should be the last option you take, though if nothing else works it’s what you need to do. I say the last thing because its possible, perhaps even likely, that they will come in and declare the house not fit for habitation, possibly make them move out, and force them to clean the house as well as (possibly) being fined and/or evicted.

As far as the animals go, you can call animal control. If the house is really dirty, then animal control will take the animals. They may also be able to help with the raccoons and find someone to help your friends get cleaned up and back on track.

Though that’s good for your friends as far as health goes, it could signal the end of your friendship. You can call the health department and ask them not to tell your friends you called, and not tell them yourself if you’re comfortable with that. Then you might be able to keep them as friends.

Something needs to be done, though. Helping them is the right thing to do, even if they don’t like it.

it can be achieved but not through strength, it would be a feat of techinique. However, they are specifically designed not to allow leverage while being worn so its unlikely it could be done while wearing them. i have seen them snapped at the link but not while being worn.

I wanted to know if Kristen Stewart has diabetes. She was at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk To Cure Diabetes in LA this weekend and I was wondering if she actually has diabetes or if she simply was promoting herself for New Moon (coming out next week).

How exactly does a pulse oximeter measure the amount of oxygen in your blood?

Especially since its applied externally over the finger? And why the index finger?

A source of light originates from the probe at two wavelengths (650nm and 805nm). The light is partly absorbed by haemoglobin, by amounts which differ depending on whether it is saturated or desaturated with oxygen. By calculating the absorption at the two wavelengths the processor can compute the proportion of haemoglobin which is oxygenated. The oximeter is dependant on a pulsatile flow and produces a graph of the quality of flow. Where flow is sluggish (eg hypovolaemia or vasoconstriction) the pulse oximeter may be unable to function. The computer within the oximeter is capable of distinguishing pulsatile flow from other more static signals (such as tissue or venous signals) to display only the arterial flow.
