I have a Littman II SE, which I am ready to toss. I cannot hear most murmurs unless they are totally obvious. I have tried even the Littman III Cardiology scope but it does not even compare to my vet’s Philips Rappaport-Sprague scope. Unfortunately, they are now discontinued and I cannot find one for sale anywhere. I even like the $30 Prestige Sprague better than my Littman….
I have listened to an ultrascope which is better than mine, but I am not keen on carrying that bulky scope everywhere….
I would like to find a stethoscope that comes close to the Philips (formerly HP) scope that is not digital….
Can someone please Help?
As a RT I use a stethoscope all the time. I think the best one is the one you can hear out of. Weather it cost $100 or $12 as long as you can hear what you need to hear. When you go to shop for one try it on and listen, can you hear the noises around you? Then use it on people in the store (clerks other customers, just ask most dont mind you listening to them.) then decide. Thats how I decide which I am going to buy.

"A look at diabetes, examining the ways in which the disease develops, its different forms and symptoms, the effects it has on a person`s daily life, and improvements in methods of treatment"–Provided by publisher.
In this graceful memoir, the now-grown son of actor Peter Lawford and Pat Kennedy Lawford looks back on his life with sober eyes, recalling his childhood experiences among the rich and famous and his own long battle with alcohol and drugs. Christopher Kennedy Lawford shares anecdotes about his wonder years growing up in a Kennedy family circle headed by Uncles Jack and Bobby–a time of Camelot that was soon to be forever changed by the tragic events that made people talk of a "Kennedy curse." Lawford writes eloquently about the effect of the two assassinations on the family, and the sadness, fear, and depression that affected many of its members for years afterwards. The young Chris also traveled in the showbiz world of his Rat Pack father, and he relates many stories about the likes of Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe. Lawford does not gloss over the very dark side of his life and his struggle to find his own place among the famous clan. But he also notes that his recovery from addiction has changed his outlook, providing him with the sense of balance and perspective that makes SYMPTOMS OF WITHDRAWAL a memoir of experience, strength, and hope.
An easy-to-read, question-and-answer format provides up-to-date information on diabetes, its diverse symptoms, and treatments, discussing such topics as weight loss, the affects of stress on blood glucose, and lowering the risk of kidney damage. Original.
My Mom is in her 60s and has high blood pressure and is on drugs for it. Last week out of nowhere her blood pressure elevated to 200/100. It’s never been that high. Her dr put her on another pill and it lowered it to 100/? but now she feels light headed and lethargic. Even on this new pill her blood pressure still spikes throughout the day to 200/100. She has no other side effects. She had a flu shot and tetanus shot right before this happened and that’s the only thing out there. Her Dr’s can’t figure it out. We are very worried. Anyone have this happen?
Worsening hypertension as a result of flu & tetanus shots is not really a well documented side effect…. I’ve certainly not heard of it myself. Sudden development of unstable hypertension may be the result of a secondary cause of hypertension, rather than the usual primary hypertension we often see (that is, no specific cause, but age & other risk factor related).
Secondary causes include hormone secreting tumours, renal disease, medications, and vascular disease (particularly renal artery stenosis).
All the best to you!

Can I adjust my diet to lower my blood pressure by staying under Recommended Daily Allowances?
Hello.
I’m 25 years old and I recently had a physical which showed I have “borderline high” blood pressure. It is a genetic condition, but I am trying to fight it without supporting the pharmaceutical companies. My dad is able to control his blood pressure, but he uses expensive prescriptions. I get exercise and I don’t smoke, but my diet could use some tweaking.
I read on Web MD that the most important diet factors are salt, saturated fat, and cholesterol. The RDA for these (according to my milk jug) is about 2400mg/day sodium, 20 g sat. fat, and 250 mg cholesterol. Are these good numbers to stay under in a day, or do I need to be more intense (more like1800 Na, 10 g SF, 100 cholesterol)?
I know that your body needs these things to function, but I dont know how little is too little. Any ideas?
Thanks.
There are natural ways to normalize blood pressure. First check with your doctor to find out what the maximum amount of daily sodium intake you are allowed to have. Stay under the limit as low as possible. The doctor will probably have a blood test ordered.
After you hear from the doc, control your sodium intake, drink plenty of water. Don’t drink soda. It is high in caffeine. Limit your coffee to no more than 3 cups per day. Too much caffeine will raise blood pressure.
There are food supplements available to help in normalizing blood pressure. Email me for the name if you want.
Exercise, exercise and exercise. That is very important along with the other ways mentioned.
good luck

Diabetic meal planning help needed – a good exchange guide free on the net?
I am taking steriods that are raising my blood sugar and I need to modify my diet to regulate, but don’t know how. Is there a reliable web site to help me set up a guide?
Oh, gee, I feel for you!! I too am taking the nasty steroids and they were doing a number on my glucose levels. I simply cut down on the grams of carbs I am eating. So I am back to a very highly restricted 20 grams of carb.
I eat absolutely no grain products, no starchy veggies and no sweets at all.
I am on insulins and oral as well. So this is no picnic.
Meats and salads and maybe an apple a week.
think of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and green beans as very very low carb fruits and you can do this.
Read Dr Bernsteins chapters 9 and 10. This is the link to chapter 9 and you can go from there. I hope it helps you too.

With the advent of the worldwide obesity epidemic, a concurrent rise has occurred in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is affecting younger individuals-the disease is no longer exclusive to adulthood. Diabetic micro- and macrovascular complications are also occurring at an earlier age, leading to increasing demands and costs on the healthcare system. In addition, the morbidity, disability and premature death caused by diabetic complications create a huge burden to families, employers and society at large. Thankfully, there has been a tremendous growth in new therapeutic classes of medications to help manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. These agents target many of the pathophysiologic defects of the disease with fewer side effects than the older agents. Newer insulin formulations have more predictable kinetics so patients can achieve better glycemic control with less risk of hypoglycemia and weight gain. Insulin delivery devices have also improved to include higher quality insulin pens, finer and shorter pen needles, and more technologically advanced insulin pumps. As part of the Oxford American Endocrinology Library series, this handbook reviews the epidemiology and pathophysiology of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The content covers micro- and macrovascular diabetic complications, the array of glucose regulating therapies, treatment algorithms targeting the pathophysiologic defects of type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as strategies for macrovascular risk reduction via therapeutic lifestyle change (diet, exercise, smoking cessation), pharmacotherapeutic treatment of dyslipidemia and hypertension, bariatric surgery and subcutaneous insulin infusion therapy, among other topics. Because of the concise yet comprehensive nature of the handbook, this volume is an excellent point-of-care reference for the clinician who regulary treats obese and diabetic patients.
If I am pre-diabetic and start experiencing eye problems, does it mean its become diabetes?
These eye problems are REALLY similar to what they say diabetics get. Temporary blurryness where I can’t see faces from far away and reading gives me a headache; bulging veins in my eyes (not just bloodshot, bulging); days where my eyes are fine (maybe 2 days or 3 days a week), its usually worse at night….
I was told twice that I have high blood sugar and both times I managed to bring it down to average. It’s been about 8 months since I last checked and….well I fixed my diet but it might have been too little too late.
Can you experience this problem when your condition is still reversable? Or does this mean I have to start taking medication and calling myself diabetic?
I am getting a blood check as soon as possible but may have to wait a week or two and am looking for some temporary answers.
Thank you
Actually, Runner, If you don’t mind I would like to email you directly but your email is blocked on yahoo answers
