As technology advances, practicing or training otolaryngologists register in educational courses to refresh their surgical skills and stay abreast of these changes. While information is becoming available in several journals, there is a definite need for a single surgical atlas-like book that contains precise descriptions of the surgical techniques used in rhinology and sleep apnea surgery. Each chapter was written by surgeons with extensive experience in each topic who have already published on the specific procedure described. Each chapter contains diagrammatic or illustrative descriptions of surgical techniques and provides tips and pearls of wisdom to avoid complications when the procedures are performed. This comprehensive work of surgical information serves as a valuable resource for otolaryngologists in training to augment their surgical education and for practicing otolaryngologists as a review source to best approach the surgical pathologies they encounter in their practice of rhinology and treatment of sleep apnea.

Anyone have info on alternative treatment for possible chronic bone infection in a below knee amputation?
My husband’s amputation occurred in Nov 2005 and was revised in May 2006. It was caused by a diabetic ulcer that became gangrenous. He has a draining wound that has not healed from the revision. Further amputation is advised although bone infection has not been proved.
These infections are extremely difficult to treat because adequate circulation must be maintained in the area. One of the reasons that the infection started to begin with is diabetic circulatory problem. I would follow the advise of the physician, or seek a second opinion from another physician. I have heard that a reputable wound clinic may also be of help. A relatively new treatment for wounds is the use of a hyperbaric chamber. You could ask your physician if this is appropriate for the type of wound that your husband has. MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus) and other bacterial organisms need to be dealt with aggressively so that your husband does not become septic. This happens when the infection spreads to the circulatory system, or when toxins produced by the bacteria cause shock.

Every year, 7 or 8 of every 1,000 Americans who have diabetes undergo amputation of a foot. The rate may be twice as high in African Americans as in whites and even higher in Hispanic and Native Americans. In all diabetic patients, the rate of amputation increases with age and duration of the disease. Clearly, attentive and rigorous care is needed in these patients. In this article, Dr Muha summar…

In The Diabetic Foot: Medical and Surgical Management, a distinguished panel of clinicians-many practicing at the famous Joslin-Beth Israel Deaconess Foot Center-illuminate the successful new multidisciplinary approach now clearly required for the successful treatment of this medical problem. Drawing on the experiences of diabetologists, podiatrists, vascular surgeons, infectious disease specialists, orthotists, plastic and orthopedic surgeons, the book clearly describes established techniques known to be effective. Also highlighted are the many emerging treatments that will affect diabetic foot care in the years ahead, including a new understanding of wound-healing pathophysiology and the recent introduction of growth factors and living skin equivalents.
Almost twenty years after the publication of the first edition, our knowledge of how to effectively treat incest victims has grown tremendously. Drawing on the latest research, Christine Courtois presents a fully updated treatment manual for therapists.
Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein belonging to the transferrin family. It acts as a defense in host animals against microbes and viruses, since it has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial and antiviral activities. Lactoferrin has been shown to regulate the growth and differentiation of many types of cells. The results of recent studies indicate that lactoferrin is a potent regulator of dermal fibroblasts, and promotes cutaneous wound healing. The collagen gel contraction, a model of wound contraction during wound healing process, and migration of human fibroblasts were enhanced by lactoferrin. LRP-1 (LDL Receptor related Protein-1) acts as a signaling receptor for lactoferrin that mediate fibroblast response to lactoferrin by activating ERK/MAPK signaling pathway. In addition, lactoferrin promotes biosynthesis of extracellular matrix (ECM) component such as type-I collagen and hyaluronan. Hyaluronan is a major component of ECM in connective tissue and promotes wound healing. The promoting effect of lactoferrin on hyaluronan production was accompanied by promotion of HAS2 (hyaluronan synthase 2) expression. These observations suggest that lactoferrin promotes the wound healing by providing an ECM that promotes fibroblast migration.Lactoferrin is also known for its anti-inflammatory and immune modulating properties. According to recent in vivo study, lactoferrin promotes wound repair by promoting the early inflammatory phase of wound healing. Based on this, recombinant human lactoferrin was subsequently tested clinically in a Phase II trial in patients with diabetic ulcers and was found to be effective. Lactoferrin should be further evaluated in patients with diabetic and other types of ulcers.
Oral Wound Healing: Cell Biology and Clinical Management brings experts from around the world together to provide an authoritative reference on the processes, principles and clinical management of wound healing in the oral mucosa. Promoting a thorough understanding of current research on the topic, this new resource draws together thinking on the basic biological processes of wound healing in the oral environment, as well as providing more detailed information and discussion on processes such as inflammation, reepithelialization and angiogenesis. Beyond this, the book goes on to examine topics pertinent to the effective clinical management of oral wound healing, bringing together chapters on large dento-facial defects, dental implants, periodontal regeneration, and pulp healing. An essential synthesis of current research and clinical applications, Oral Wound Healing will be an indispensable resource for dental specialists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons as well as researchers in oral medicine and biology.
My dad had one at age 46 and subsequently died 6 weeks later of a heart attack. He was severely overweight, had hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Would those three factors have caused it or could it just have been a spontaneous thing.
Are aneurysms hereditary? I don’t want to die at 46 too..
As far as the aneurysms being hereditary, its been suggested that if more than one second or first degree family member has had one you should get screened. However its rare that more then one family member will have one
What is type 2 diabetes? – Diabetes, medicines and me series
In DEFEATING DIABETES, a doctor and a dietitian provide a wealth of information to help diabetics navigate the difficult terrain, offering practical and supportive advice on a condition that can often be controlled through healthy diet and lifestyle decisions. They begin by describing the the warning signs and risk factors, they explain the basics of blood sugar. They also show how the glycemic index can be used and offer advice on carbohydrates and fats. One of the most helpful ideas is their section on smart shopping, in which they explain the why and how behind the many foods that can promote good health, followed by 50 recipes for healthy eating. Chapters on exercise and medication round out this useful guide.
Written by a leading expert in the field, this is a helpful guide that describes and gives effective ideas of how to cope with a diagnosis. Efficient synthesis of the data and information from these diverse sources is crucial to prioritize interventions and assemble resources for the implementation of public health programs. This book meets this need and builds on previous works to reflect the evolution of science related to diabetes public health.Through compelling evidence related to the current health and economic impact of diabetes, the book provides effective approaches to prevent and manage diabetes through the practice of public health. It combines state-of-the-art descriptions of risk factors and complications, effective and cost-effective approaches to prevention and treatment, translational research, and genomics to give a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis on diabetes public health. Critical review and synthesis of influential epidemiologic studies and consensus statements, expected future advances in trials and technologies, and public health information resources are also highlighted topics. With significant attention to diabetes control in the U.S. and North America, Diabetes Public Health should be required reading for public health practitioners and researchers, as well as anyone involved in health policy, administration and management. It will also be of interest to academics in the field of diabetes and other chronic diseases.
Would I be able to sell a home brewed alcohol online?
I have a family recipe of a mixed alcohol drink that they don’t serve in bars, would I be able to make it and sell it online?
No.
First off, you must be a licensed producer with tax id and all appropriate licenses from your state liquor control board, TTB, etc.
Second, you cannot sell a mixed drink that uses liquor of other manufacturers, even if you are a licensed manufacturer or distributor.
Third, to sell online, you also need to hold a license for inter-state sale of alcoholic beverages, which essentially means you must hold a license in every state you plan to ship to.
Fourth, as far as shipping goes, you cannot ship booze through USPS, FedEx, UPS and many others. Specially licensed alcohol shippers are the only legal way to go, and they are pricey.
As far as the underage thing goes, these shippers require a signature and proof of age upon delivery, or the package will not be left, but that is negligible in this case.
Nice idea, though.
Cheers

My mother has diabetes and now has paresthesias( pin and needles) which makes it difficult to walk or even sleep. Can this be fixed or will she have this happen again. I recently bought her some Capsaicin Cream from the local CVS which has helped her, but how can I be sure she won’t have paresthesias again.
I’ve tried looking for endocrinologist but was turned down. We went to a physician which gave her pills that did nothing but make her sick and throw up. Her vision is getting blurry and I believe this is because of the complication of being a diabetic.
What can we do? Who can we go to?
You must be a special child to care so much about your mother. I too have diabetes. When my legs ache ans the pins and needles thing starts to happen I believe it is because of poor circulation. What helps me the most is to have someone rub my legs starting at my toes and working up my leg and then going back down. Rubbing in a circular motion really helps. I am very fortunate because either my daughter or husband do this on a daily basis to help me so I don’t hurt and go numb.
If her physician will not recommend a specialist I would suggest she goes to another doctor and another doctor until she finds one who will recommend her to a specialist. Diabetes is nothing to mess with. I would agree with you about her eyes too. she should go to a good optometrist and be checked. I know I am getting cataracts which I feel are a result of my diabetes and age.
I wish you the best of luck in finding help for your mother. Please let me know how things are going. I sincerely do care. My e mail is Jill@diaperingneeds.com and my site is http:www.diaperingneeds.com please visit it any time.

The preface makes the statement that in the past ten years "all societies have seen an explosion in obesity and diabetes. As a result, there is also an explosion in long-term diabetes complications." My blood pressure is 85/53 and i have been feeling dizzy, sick and high fatigue, what do i do?
I am 19 and have been experiencing chronic fatigue (sleeping up to 18 hours a day and feeling very exhausted even after waking up), very low appetite and then sudden high appetite, dizziness, poor circulation, and frequent headaches.
I have a average body height (5’9″) weight (139lbs) ratio, but cannot keep to a proper diet, and don’t know if exercising with such a low blood pressure is risky?
I also have had my blood pressure checked and is 85/53 (but a normal heart rate) and that is after 30 minutes of rigorous biking.
I don’t know why it is so low and i don’t know how to healthily get my diet, sleep schedule, and hopefully in turn blood pressure back to normal (for the majority of my life i have been an athlete with blood pressure around 118/75)?
If despite a supposedly low blood pressure your heart rate is normal then it is not likely that the blood pressure is the issue. There are a variety of problems that may be causing your symptoms such as a thyroid disorder. Obviously sleeping 18 hours a day is not healthy. The variable appetite, dizziness, and frequent headaches must have a specific cause. Whatever the problem it will require you to see your physician. I wish you the very best of health and happiness and in all things may God bless. JR

Can T2DM Increase Risk for Early Dementia? Does a Diabetic Coma Cause Post Stroke Symptoms?
This innovative ethnographic study animates the racial politics that underlie genomic research into type 2 diabetes, one of the most widespread chronic diseases and one that affects ethnic groups disproportionately. Michael J. Montoya follows blood donations from "Mexican-American" donors to laboratories that are searching out genetic contributions to diabetes. His analysis lays bare the politics and ethics of the research process, addressing the implicit contradiction of undertaking genetic research that reinscribes race`s importance even as it is being demonstrated to have little scientific validity. In placing DNA sampling, processing, data set sharing, and carefully crafted science into a broader social context, Making the Mexican Diabetic underscores the implications of geneticizing disease while illuminating the significance of type 2 diabetes research in American life.
