ABC of Diabetes (Paperback)

ABC of Diabetes (Paperback)

$57.36

The ABC of Diabetes provides a complete overview of diabetes including the aetiology, diagnosis and management of Types 1 and 2 diabetes, detection and prevention, and the organization of care and support. With new chapters on psychological aspects, surveillance for complications, and support for people living with diabetes, this completely revised edition covers the many changes taking place in diabetes care, particularly in screening for Type 2 diabetes; in monitoring and insulin administration; in the organisation and delivery of care; and the increasing prevalence of diabetes in both developed and developing countries. This sixth edition covers the early recognition of diabetes and cardiovascular risk as well as preventing complications specific to diabetes. It also addresses the need to deliver diabetes care in a multidisciplinary setting, including the UK Quality and Outcomes Framework, and reflects the increasing emphasis on self-management and patient-centred care, particularly as it relates to lifestyle changes, glycaemic control and patient choice over treatment options. Drawing on the expertise of the University of Warwick as a centre of excellence for the teaching of diabetes care, the best selling ABC of Diabetes is ideal for GPs, primary care practitioners, practice nurses, diabetes specialist nurses, health visitors and junior doctors.

Is there actually a cure for athlete’s foot?

My dad has it, and apparently does little to address the problem, he’s also diabetic and I heard that having that is bad for people with diabetes…
I reseached it but I only came up treating the problem, but no cure…so is there a cure, and if there is what do you recommend?

there is a cure but the cure is the treatment, using the cream/spray, have him change shoes and socks because even if you treat it if you put your foot back into and infected object the cycle begins again, if he ever walks around barefoot at say a pool or a gym, get him some rubber slippers or something he can wear that wont absorb the water on the floor, scrub his floor with disinfecting solutions according to their instructions. and if you are serious about it, buy a product called hibiclens, it is surgical grade soap that kills after it is applied, it can be found in the soap or first aid isle in most stores but mostly in pharmacy. hope this helps

Is Apnea Risk Evaluation System (ARES) safe to use for sleep study?

The reason I ask is becate there are sensors and electrodes to attach to the head. Is this harmful to the brain in any form?
What about the Advanced Brain Monitoring Watermark ARES devoce for home sleep tests?

The wires attached to your head have a conductive paste that pick up the electrical activity of the brain. So there is nothing going into your brain, it is actually the reverse, the electricity is being put out by your brain and the wires are conducting the electricity and transmitting it to the equipment.

Central Regulation of Autonomic Function (Hardcover)

Central Regulation of Autonomic Function (Hardcover)

$106.76

Central autonomic circuits in the brain and spinal cord are essential to vertebrate life: they control all basic bodily functions, including blood pressure, body temperature regulation, digestion, and reproduction.Edited by two experts in the field, Ida Llewellyn-Smith and Anthony J. M. Verberne, and extensively illustrated, the second edition of Central Regulation of Autonomic Function presents the extraordinary advances that have been made over the last 20 years in the understanding of how our central nervous system controls autonomic functions. Written in a clear and readable manner by an international collection of neuroscientists and physiologists, the first nine chapters describe central autonomic circuits from the cerebral cortex to the periphery. Eight more chapters address specific bodily functions and their control by central autonomic circuits. Two additional chapters discuss cardio-respiratory integration and regulation of autonomic function by visceral and somatic afferents. All of the chapters are up-to-date and cover topics such as the central autonomic regulation of airways, gastrointestinal function, energy homeostasis, body temperature, and sexual function, reflecting the latest research. One of the only texts to provide the whole story of how the brain controls basic bodily functions that are critical for life, Central Regulation of Autonomic Function will be essential reading for graduate students and researchers in neuroscience, anatomy, pharmacology and physiology as well as a valuable reference work for established workers in the field.

Dark bruise looking circle under my big toe on my left foot =[?

There is no pain, really. Only a little and it scares me cuz I don't know if it may be Cancer or something Diabetes related. I am a 21 yr old Diabetic, with Diabetes for 8 yrs. Type 1 diabetic. Low energy extreme fatigue.?

I’ve been diagnosed a type 1 diabetic september of 2009. I have been able to control it and my weight as well and got an a1c of 6 my last visit to the doctors. I’ve had numerious blood work and everything else seems to be alright. The only problem I’ve been having his extreme fatigue especially after i eat. There are some days i just want to lay in bed all day and not get up. I have been running on low energy and its really starting to bother me. Maybe its the foods i eat? I dont’ know. I would love some suggestions on how to regain my energy levels back to normal.

It would be nice to know your fasting, 2 hour post-prandial (after meal), and bed-time glucose readings. An A1C (the test is a glycated hemoglobin A1C not a ‘glycosylated’ hemoglobin A1C as most laboratories report) of 6% may sound like a good idea but it may also mean that you are experiencing hypoglycemic episodes. The question of what the goal for A1C should be is a very good question. There was a time when there was no firm goal. As newer oral medications became available the goal for type 2 diabetics became an A1C of 7.0%. As newer analog insulins became available the goal for both type 1 and type 2 diabetics became an A1C of 6.5%. At this point physicians realized that we could drive the A1C of a type 1 diabetic to any level that we wanted. Physicians – myself included – began to drive the A1C down to 6% or less. This would be the A1C of a non-diabetic. It seemed like a good idea but it became quickly apparent that people did not feel well. Only 2 studies have been carried out looking at type 1 diabetics with an A1C of 6% or less and both found adverse outcomes. Until larger, longer, and more rigorous study is carried out prudence suggests that an A1C of 6.5% should be your goal. The difference between 6.5% and 6.0% approximates (the relationship between A1C and mean (average) glucose is non-linear) a difference in the 90 day mean glucose of 14.5 mg/dL or 0.8 mmol/L. Surprisingly this seemingly small difference has the potential to cause individuals to feel as poorly as you do. Again it is essential that you check fasting, 2 hour post-prandial, and bed-time glucose for several days. You should then call your physician’s office and give these readings to the nurse (I actually have people email me their readings). The nurse or the physician will call you back with further instructions. Might I say that this is a potentially dangerous forum in which to seek health-care advice given the potential seriousness of hypoglycemic episodes if you are experiencing them. Different individuals feel differently at any given glucose level and sometimes how quickly the glucose drops – even if it does not drop below 70 mg/dL or 3.9 mmol/L – may be a factor in how an individual feels. In order to ‘regain your strength’ it is first necessary to take multiple glucose readings for several days as outlined above. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I answer health questions free of charge as a public service – johnerussomd@jhu.edu. I wish you the very best of health and in all things may God bless.

Amy Bloom has won a devoted readership and wide critical acclaim for fiction of rare humor, insight, grace, and eloquence, and the same qualities distinguishNormal, a provocative, intimate journey into the lives of“people who reveal, or announce, that their gender is variegated rather than monochromatic”—female-to-male transsexuals, heterosexual crossdressers, and the intersexed. We meet Lyle Monelle and his mother, Jessie, who recognized early on that her little girl was in fact a boy and used her life savings to help Lyle make the transition. On a Carnival cruise with a group of crossdressers and their spouses, we meet Peggy Rudd and her husband,“Melanie,” who devote themselves to the cause of“ordinary heterosexual men with an additional feminine dimension.” And we meet Hale Hawbecker,“a regular, middle-of-the-road, white-bread guy” with a wife, kids, and a medical condition, the standard treatment for which would have changed his life and his gender.Casting light into the dusty corners of our assumptions about sex, gender and identity, Bloom reveals new facets to the ideas of happiness, personality and character, even as she brilliantly illuminates the very concept of"normal.”

i have a home monitor. i have been taking my bp at regular intervals throughout the day to see if im ok. what happens is- i am around the house watching tv, doing chores, ect. then i go lay in my bed and take my bp and its around 140/100. if lie there for a few minutes and take it again, it goes back to normal. then i get up again, mess around the house, and again the same thing. whats up with this?
ps i am 25 yr old female with primary htn. currently on coreg cr 40 mg per day. my blood pressure is usually good throughout the day- this usually tends to happen in the evening. any advice, i am kind of worried. thanks!

The blood pressure is elevated, especially the bottom number (diastolic pressure). As long as you feel fine and have no symptoms, then it is nothing to panic about. If you have chest pain, shortness of breath, etc. then this is concerning. The goal blood pressure in most people is below 140/85-90. If you have diabetes or kidney disease then the goal would be below 130/80. If your blood pressure is only high at one time of the day, this suggests that the Coreg is losing it’s effect around this time. Coreg is generally given twice daily, but the CR (controlled release) is once daily. It is possible that the effect of Coreg does not completely last 24 hours, therefore you have a short period where your BP is elevated. Discuss this with your doctor, because maybe you need a change your medication, dosing, or time of administration. I hope this helps.

Blindness caused due to diabetes?

My dad is arround 60 yr old having diabetes since 6 yrs and it has startted affeting his vision. now my dad cant see anything in night, hardly he can see in the day. I know for diabetes there is no medicine to cure but i am affraid of this vision problem. Plz tell is there any way to put back his vision to normal. anything i just want to know.

It is almost certainly the diabetes that is the reason behind your Dad’s sight problems, but the immediate cause could be a number of things, some more serious than others.

If the cause is cataracts, then providing there is no retinal damage his sight could be almost completely restored. If it is a retinal problem it will be more serious.

He should be going to a diabetic clinic, and his health should be carefully monitored, and this includes careful monitoring of his vision. This is the age at which diabetic complications start to appear.

Get him to see the doctor and go to the next diabetic clinic.

Pharmacotherapy of Diabetes:New Developments

Pharmacotherapy of Diabetes:New Developments

$163.92

In the United States, 20.8 million children and adults, 7% of the population, have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed, 6.2 million have yet to be diagnosed. Worldwide diabetes afflicts 150 million people. The World Health Organization estimates that by 2025 that figure will double. Diabetes is responsible for more deaths than AIDS and breast cancer, combined. It is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, amputations, heart complications and stroke.Treatment of Type 1 and Type diabetes has changed radically over the past few years. There are new opportunities for treating the key abnormality in diabetes, increased blood glucose, by effective agents such as new insulin preparations and oral agents.Increasing so-called non-glycemic intervention is of prime importance. Blood pressure lowering therapies, anti-cholesterol strategies, and specific treatment related to complications is becoming increasingly important.Pharmacotherapy of Diabetes is a unique, invaluable guide to all aspects of the pharmacological treatment of diabetes, covering basic concepts and an in-depth review of current and future therapies. This work provides an overview for the new changes in therapies that can be implemented in clinical practice and treatment of the diabetic patient.
