Difficulty breathing, dizziness, and spikes in blood pressure. What’s going on?

I have been having episodes of difficulty breathing and dizziness about twice a month for the past year. They only last about 20 minutes and seem to be more frequent in the fall and the summer. My doctor tested me for athsma; there was nothing wrong with my lungs. Then she gave me a perscription for Xanax, thinking I may be having panic attacks, and that didn’t do much.
Today I had an episode, and thinking it might be low blood pressure, I decided to use a blood pressure monitor to check. After a few readings on both arms, standing, sitting and laying down, my average blood pressure was about 150/105. (I used the monitor on my boyfriend and it said his pressure was normal, so I don’t think it was a misreading.)
I am pretty young to be having any problems with my blood pressure, and usually my readings are fairly normal.
What could be causing all these symptoms together for short periods of time if it’s not anxiety?

it depends…does anything like moving around quickly, any particular movement, exercise or getting up from laying down provoke this condition? do you experience any numbness or tingling when this happens? when you say there is nothing wrong with your lungs, did you have an xray of your chest? do you feel your heartbeat in your chest during these ‘attacks’? do you experience headaches at all? this might not be lung related, maybe more related to the heart. it could be nothing, but it also could be a mild to serious condition. i would get a full checkup, maybe check out your heart, or possibly get an mri/cat to determine if there are any abnormalities in your blood vessels or any nerve leisons. so, id go to the doctor again. maybe even another doctor. maybe its just sudden anxiety or panic attacks, maybe you have something like a nasty allergy, maybe even something like a pre-stroke condition or aneurysm (anurism, aneurism, ?) yea the doctor.

Lack of Oxygen to Eye – non contact lense wearer?

I’ve been told by my optician that I have lack of oxygen to the eyes. He stated that it appeared I wear contact lenses which I don’t – I don’t even wear glasses. Although I do work in an air conditioned office, and I have no control of the settings as it is all central.

Does anybody have any ideas on how I can get more oxygen to my eyes – as from what I’ve read on the web it can lead to more serious issues?

You might have to check with an optamologist or doctor and see if some other medical condition can cause these symptoms. I very much doubt it is the air conditioning in your office, if the oxygen in the air there was so low it was affecting your eyes, everybody there would be dead. Occasionally, there is a case where the intake of the air conditioning system gets put right next to the outlet vent of a lab fume hood or exhaust from some industrial process and irritating or toxic fumes get sucked back into the building, but in this case, probably everybody would have the same problems

ABC of Diabetes (Paperback)

ABC of Diabetes (Paperback)

$46.53

The ABC of Diabetes provides a complete overview of diabetes including the aetiology, diagnosis and management of Types 1 and 2 diabetes, detection and prevention, and the organization of care and support. With new chapters on psychological aspects, surveillance for complications, and support for people living with diabetes, this completely revised edition covers the many changes taking place in diabetes care, particularly in screening for Type 2 diabetes; in monitoring and insulin administration; in the organisation and delivery of care; and the increasing prevalence of diabetes in both developed and developing countries. This sixth edition covers the early recognition of diabetes and cardiovascular risk as well as preventing complications specific to diabetes. It also addresses the need to deliver diabetes care in a multidisciplinary setting, including the UK Quality and Outcomes Framework, and reflects the increasing emphasis on self-management and patient-centred care, particularly as it relates to lifestyle changes, glycaemic control and patient choice over treatment options. Drawing on the expertise of the University of Warwick as a centre of excellence for the teaching of diabetes care, the best selling ABC of Diabetes is ideal for GPs, primary care practitioners, practice nurses, diabetes specialist nurses, health visitors and junior doctors.

Type 1 Diabetes in Adults (Book)

Type 1 Diabetes in Adults (Book)

$20.03

At a time of dramatic increases in the prevalence of obesity, it is appropriate that Type 2 diabetes has received a great deal of attention by the endocrinology community. Clearly, the management of insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk is a critical issue. However, it is important to also acknowledge and address Type 1 diabetes, whose prevalence is also increasing, and whose management remains complex. Currently it is estimated that 10-15% of those with diabetes carry the diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, and frequently the diagnosis is not straightforward, as many clinicians recognize that more adults previously thought to have Type 2 diabetes actually have late-onset Type 1 diabetes (also termed latent autoimmune diabetes of the adult or LADA). Over the last decade tools for the management of Type 1 diabetes have also evolved; therefore, clinicians now have the opportunity to more closely replicate normal physiologic insulin secretion with either basal-bolus insulin therapy or continuous subcutaneous insulin infusions. While these advancements allow clinicians to manage patients with Type 1 diabetes better, they also add complexity to patient treatment. An updated text to address the concepts behind the recognition of new onset Type 1 diabetes in adults, the ongoing care of adults with established Type 1 diabetes, and future potential therapies and devices is warranted to review these issues for both endocrinologists and primary care providers with an interest in diabetes. As part of the Oxford American Endocrinology Library, this volume stands as a concise guide in the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes in adults. The authors briefly examine the classification and pathophysiology of Type 1 diabetes (including predication and prevention and LADA) and address management (blood glucose monitoring, insulin therapy, and Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion) and complications (Hyperglycemia, Retinocpathy, Nephropathy, Neuropathy, etc) of the disease. Finally

Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (Paperback)

Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (Paperback)

$24.74

With the advent of the worldwide obesity epidemic, a concurrent rise has occurred in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is affecting younger individuals-the disease is no longer exclusive to adulthood. Diabetic micro- and macrovascular complications are also occurring at an earlier age, leading to increasing demands and costs on the healthcare system. In addition, the morbidity, disability and premature death caused by diabetic complications create a huge burden to families, employers and society at large. Thankfully, there has been a tremendous growth in new therapeutic classes of medications to help manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. These agents target many of the pathophysiologic defects of the disease with fewer side effects than the older agents. Newer insulin formulations have more predictable kinetics so patients can achieve better glycemic control with less risk of hypoglycemia and weight gain. Insulin delivery devices have also improved to include higher quality insulin pens, finer and shorter pen needles, and more technologically advanced insulin pumps. As part of the Oxford American Endocrinology Library series, this handbook reviews the epidemiology and pathophysiology of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The content covers micro- and macrovascular diabetic complications, the array of glucose regulating therapies, treatment algorithms targeting the pathophysiologic defects of type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as strategies for macrovascular risk reduction via therapeutic lifestyle change (diet, exercise, smoking cessation), pharmacotherapeutic treatment of dyslipidemia and hypertension, bariatric surgery and subcutaneous insulin infusion therapy, among other topics. Because of the concise yet comprehensive nature of the handbook, this volume is an excellent point-of-care reference for the clinician who regulary treats obese and diabetic patients.

Now my questions are: When is the best time to exercise? Any special precautions where the diabetes is concerned? The only meds I take is metformin 1000 2x a day every other day. Other then that I am diet controlled only. I don’t eat my carb allowance daily. My limit is 45 – 60 carbs per meal with 1 15-30g snack in afternoon. I usually eat only 80-105g total a day. Do I need to change that as well? Any advice suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Deb ; Doc lowered my metformin to every other day, as I was having severe lows on a regular basis. It has been working so far. Only one low sugar incident since the change. (May 29)
Both answers are great and very helpful to me. I can’t pick one as best, so I am going to let the other folks decide. Sorry. But thanks so much.

Miss Carmelia
I read one of your other questions about having low blood sugars, and I just want to tell you that exercise will lower your blood sugar. It becomes such a delicate balance with chemicals when one is a diabetic, and the disease is progressive so it’s admirable that you are taking care of yourself.

I am a member of Curves, which is a women’s circuit training gym. I like it because I don’t have to really think, I just do what’s in front of me. The gym I go to has Curves Smart, an electronic program that tracks my progress and pushes me to exercise to my limit. There are two tracks on the Smart system, one is for weight loss, the other is for weight management. The gym has become a social outlet too. I also walk, and I just bought a “Body Bugg” which measures caloric intake and output. It is what they use on The Biggest Loser to tell if they are exercising enough to offset the food intake. I know that I am going to have to up my exercise level to lose weight.

I think that you should carry a snack to the gym, where ever you end up, just in case you should have a low blood sugar. There are two schools of thought about that, some say eat candy or drink juice for a low blood sugar. Some say eat complex carbs. If I am really low, I have a tiny bit of juice, or some sort of sweet drink, and some sort of complex carbs. The reason I do this is because the juice will shoot me up, it’s a simple sugar… It will also let me crash right back down because it burns off so quick. The complex carbs will flatten out the rise in blood sugar, but will last and keep me on an even keel. I usually eat a couple of crackers or a half sandwich for the carbs.

Make sure that your potassium is ok, and that you are taking calcium. Oh yeah, use calcium citrate, not the kind from oyster shells. Your body just doesn’t absorb oyster shell material very well. If you don’t take calcium you may have body cramps while exercising. If you take calcium and you still have cramps, eat a banana, it’s probably a low potassium problem. lol, I know this is a lot, but you will learn as you go. I wish you the best of luck! <3

The Suicide Index (Paperback)

The Suicide Index (Paperback)

$14.8

At the age of 61, Joan Wickersham`s father went into his office and shot himself in the head, ending his life, and sending everyone close to him into a long, painful, perhaps interminable descent into suffering and confusion. In her brutally direct, darkly compelling memoir, Wickersham seeks to comprehend her father`s incomprehensible act, creating an index of his life in the hopes of grasping the mechanism–or perhaps malfunction–of his mind. Like a relentless detective obsessed with an unsolvable crime, Wickersham compiles evidence, proposes theories, follows leads, and culls her memory for the elusive scraps that might help her come to terms with her father`s existence as a beaten, stoic, silent failure of a man. In doing so, she begins to also chart the myriad ways in which her own life, and the lives of her children, have been devastated by his death. Though from the beginning she knows her task is hopeless, Wickersham`s intense quest is mesmerizing for the reader. One of the least sentimental and most emotionally and intellectually stimulating accounts of suicide, THE SUICIDE INDEX was nominated for the National Book Award in 2008.
