Diabetics typically have poor circulation and decreased ability to fight infection. Diabetic ulcers treated with long courses of systemic antibiotics can become colonized with drug-resistant organisms-so-called “superbugs” such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Since honey fights bacteria in numerous ways, it is essentially immune to resistance. Honey’s acidic pH, low water content (which effectively dehydrates bacteria), and the hydrogen peroxide secreted by its naturally-occurring enzymes make it ideal for combating organisms that have developed resistance to standard antibiotics.

My blood pressure is within normal parameters (75-115) but the place where I am living in does not contain enough Iodine so lots of people need to supplement it with iodised salt. I have been told that it does not raise blood pressure because Sodium had been replaced by Pottasium. Has anybody knows a little bit of biochemistry and phisiology to explain thanks
Thank you very much for your kind reply. All your messages are confirming my suspicion. That Iodized salt might raise and will raise blood pressure under certain condition
I am undecided to which answer to choose as the best. Jayaraman or Angie. The links were excelent I have done biochemistry and Phisiology at university but that was some time ago
So Jayaraman links helped me to refresh forgotten knowledge. On the other hand Angie’s links was also excellent… So I dont know which one to choose Thank you to both anyway

How does salt retention raise blood pressure?

A critical question in hypertension research is: How is long-term blood pressure controlled? Excessive NaCl (Commom salt) ingestion or NaCl retention by the kidneys and the consequent tendency toward plasma volume expansion lead to hypertension. Nevertheless, the precise mechanisms linking salt to high blood pressure are unresolved. The discovery of endogenous ouabain, an adrenocortical hormone, provided an important clue. Ouabain, a selective Na+ pump inhibitor, has cardiotonic and vasotonic effects. Plasma endogenous ouabain levels are significantly elevated in 40% of patients with essential hypertension and in animals with several forms of salt-dependent hypertension. Also, prolonged ouabain administration induces hypertension in rodents. Mice with mutant Na+ pumps or Na/Ca exchangers (NCX) and studies with a ouabain antagonist and an NCX blocker are revealing the missing molecular mechanisms. These data demonstrate that 2 Na+ pumps and NCX1 participate in long-term regulation of vascular tone and blood pressure. Pharmacological agents or mutations in the 2 Na+ pump that interfere with the action of ouabain on the pump, and reduced NCX1 expression or agents that block NCX all impede the development of salt-dependent or ouabain-induced hypertension. Conversely, nanomolar ouabain, reduced 2 Na+ pump expression, and smooth muscle-specific overexpression of NCX1 all induce hypertension. Furthermore, ouabain and reduced 2 Na+ pump expression increase myogenic tone in isolated mesenteric small arteries in vitro, thereby tying these effects directly to the elevation of blood pressure. Thus, endogenous ouabain, and vascular 2 Na+ pumps and NCX1, are critical links between salt and hypertension. New pharmacological agents that act on these molecular links have potential in the clinical management of hypertension.

For some reason, my blood pressure is quite high. I haven’t changed my diet or the amount of exercise I take but it has increased significantly from seven years ago. Don’t like taking drugs if I can help it, any ideas?
Hi there.
It can be controlled – I am doing so myself – but it isn’t easy.
What I am doing is
a) I have upped my daily exercise to minimum 5 days a week
b) NEVER add salt to your food, nor buy processed foods with high levels of salt and/or sugar in them
c) reduce coffee drinking to 1 cup a day maximum
d) reduce sugar intake drastically
e) eat pasta and vegetables in place of chips and lots of bread.
f) cut out foods with additives and artificial colourings – E numbers are a complete no.
Got to tell you though, it is a hard path and as you get older you will have to stick with it. On the plus side, you will look and feel increasingly better.
Good luck, Steve.

With the advent of the worldwide obesity epidemic, a concurrent rise has occurred in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is affecting younger individuals-the disease is no longer exclusive to adulthood. Diabetic micro- and macrovascular complications are also occurring at an earlier age, leading to increasing demands and costs on the healthcare system. In addition, the morbidity, disability and premature death caused by diabetic complications create a huge burden to families, employers and society at large. Thankfully, there has been a tremendous growth in new therapeutic classes of medications to help manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. These agents target many of the pathophysiologic defects of the disease with fewer side effects than the older agents. Newer insulin formulations have more predictable kinetics so patients can achieve better glycemic control with less risk of hypoglycemia and weight gain. Insulin delivery devices have also improved to include higher quality insulin pens, finer and shorter pen needles, and more technologically advanced insulin pumps. As part of the Oxford American Endocrinology Library series, this handbook reviews the epidemiology and pathophysiology of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The content covers micro- and macrovascular diabetic complications, the array of glucose regulating therapies, treatment algorithms targeting the pathophysiologic defects of type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as strategies for macrovascular risk reduction via therapeutic lifestyle change (diet, exercise, smoking cessation), pharmacotherapeutic treatment of dyslipidemia and hypertension, bariatric surgery and subcutaneous insulin infusion therapy, among other topics. Because of the concise yet comprehensive nature of the handbook, this volume is an excellent point-of-care reference for the clinician who regulary treats obese and diabetic patients.
The past generation has witnessed striking increases in the prevalence of childhood obesity and co-morbidities including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and fatty liver disease. Despite a wealth of investigation, there is considerable controversy regarding the etiology of childhood obesity and the optimal approaches for prevention and treatment. This book will re-assess the roles of genetic and environmental factors in the pathogenesis of childhood obesity and will review critically new studies of the effects of lifestyle, pharmacologic, and surgical interventions. This evidence-based approach will provide a useful resource for all healthcare providers concerned with the evaluation and care of children with nutritional and metabolic disease and with the societal implications of the obesity epidemic.
Although recognised clinically for some time as an important condition that increases risk of ill-health in affected individuals, it is only recently that obesity had been recognised as a population-wide problem that requires preventive action. Obesity is a major contributor to diseases and disability, the associated health costs are enormous and obesity has already reached epidemic proportions in many countries, and incidence is continuing to increase in children and adults. Disturbingly the epidemic is not confined to developed countries, with many developing countries and those in transition affected. While recognised as a major population health problem, our understanding of the causes of the epidemic is poor, there has been relatively little population-based research that has focused on the prevention of unhealthy weight gain, and as a consequence knowledge regarding how and where best to intervene is limited.Revised and updated and now part of the From Aetiology to Public Health series, Obesity Epidemiology provides a scholarly text that assists those concerned with understanding prevalence and trends in obesity; its health, social and economic consequences, the underlying causes of the obesity epidemic, the existing evidence regarding strategies to prevent obesity, and the potential of public health initiatives to impact on the population prevalence of obesity. This edition not only provides a thorough update of the material presented in the previous edition (entitled Obesity Prevention and Public Health), but also includes twelve new chapters that cover the epidemiology of obesity in children and adults, and the potential of public health approaches to its prevention. This book will be of interest to all those working in public health and epidemiology; health policy makers, and clinicians and health practitioners working in the related fields of nutrition, exercise and diabetes.About the se
Despite adults` best preventive efforts, childhood obesity is on the rise in most areas of the world, and with it the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other formerly adult-onset conditions. Epidemiology of Obesity in Children and Adolescents takes the global ecological approach that is needed to understand the scope of the problem and its multiple causes and mechanisms, and to aid in developing more effective prevention and intervention programs. In the book`s first half, experts present a descriptive summary of youth obesity trends in ten world regions, broken down by age group, gender, socioeconomic status, and risk factors. Complementing these findings, part two reviews the evidence base regarding the variables, separately and in combination, having the most significant impact on young people`s development of obesity, including:. Genetic and nutrigenomic factors.. Environmental and psychosocial factors, such as family shopping and eating habits and access to healthful foods.. Neuroendocrine regulation.. Prenatal and neonatal factors (e.g., gestational diabetes of the mother).. Dietary factors, from nutrient content to young people`s food preferences.. Physical activity versus sedentary behavior.Epidemiology of Obesity in Children and Adolescents is necessary reading for the range of professionals involved in curtailing this epidemic, including public health specialists, epidemiologists, pediatricians, nurses, nutritionists, psychologists, health educators, and policymakers.
Etiology and management are the main focus of researchers and clinicians trading views on how best to understand and deal with diabetes mellitus. Among the questions they confront are whether the steep increase is cases is due solely to the worldwide epidemic of obesity, or whether genetics or some other factor is contributing; and is the best use of resources to treat the diabetes, the obesity, or the complications that arise from one or both.
