Normal

$10.59

Amy Bloom has won a devoted readership and wide critical acclaim for fiction of rare humor, insight, grace, and eloquence, and the same qualities distinguishNormal, a provocative, intimate journey into the lives of“people who reveal, or announce, that their gender is variegated rather than monochromatic”—female-to-male transsexuals, heterosexual crossdressers, and the intersexed. We meet Lyle Monelle and his mother, Jessie, who recognized early on that her little girl was in fact a boy and used her life savings to help Lyle make the transition. On a Carnival cruise with a group of crossdressers and their spouses, we meet Peggy Rudd and her husband,“Melanie,” who devote themselves to the cause of“ordinary heterosexual men with an additional feminine dimension.” And we meet Hale Hawbecker,“a regular, middle-of-the-road, white-bread guy” with a wife, kids, and a medical condition, the standard treatment for which would have changed his life and his gender.Casting light into the dusty corners of our assumptions about sex, gender and identity, Bloom reveals new facets to the ideas of happiness, personality and character, even as she brilliantly illuminates the very concept of"normal.”

Recently, several studies have shown the crucial role of viscoelastic properties of the aorta and large arteries in determining blood pressure values. A good knowledge of cardiovascular pathophysiology and vascular hemodynamics is necessary to understand these phenomena. However, available texts on this topic are very complex and difficult for medical practitioners to understand. The aim of this book is to enable the reader to comprehend the relation between cardiovascular pathophysiology and vascular hemodynamics and to become familiar with the more recent guidelines. While very complex physical concepts are involved, care has been taken to ensure that the explanations are as straightforward as possible. Complex analyses are presented separately and can be skipped by the reader without impairment of understanding. It is envisaged that the knowledge imparted will prove invaluable in improving the approach to hypertensive patients.

My 70 yr father has renal failure and must have dialysis 3 times a week. How do we him get financial aid?

I was told there is a federal program that pays all costs involved but, I have been searching all day and just can not find one. By the way, he resides in California, and also owns a small cafe. The expense of the dialysis and other diabetes related expenses even with Medicare is out of his financial ability to continue with the treatments! Please help us.

Kidney foundations? Societies? Organizations?
Medicare denied him additional aid because he has $3000.00 in the bank! This is absolutely DISGUSTING!

If he’s a veteran he can get treatment at the VA.

As a parent, if you`re not sure what to believe about marijuana, how will you handle the subject with your child? Maybe you smoked pot as a teen, or you use marijuana today. Maybe you never tried pot, or you don`t even know what it looks like. Maybe you`re simply confused over conflicting claims about the drug whether it`s addictive, how harmful it is, why some think it should be legalized. The best way for you to help your teen make healthy choices is to be informed. This much-needed book about America`s most widely used illegal drug helps parents sort through the latest facts, the known risks, and the divergent perspectives on pot. The basic message? For teens, marijuana use equals risk. Your basic message? That`s up to you.

Understanding Marijuana (Paperback)

Understanding Marijuana (Paperback)

$53.95

Marijuana is the world`s most popular illicit drug, with hundreds of millions of regular users worldwide. One in three Americans has smoked pot at least once. The Drug Enforcement Agency estimates that Americans smoke five million pounds of marijuana each year. And yet marijuana remains largely misunderstood by both its advocates and its detractors. To some, marijuana is an insidious "stepping-stone" drug, enticing the inexperienced and paving the way to the inevitable abuse of harder drugs. To others, medical marijuana is an organic means of easing the discomfort or stimulating the appetite of the gravely ill. Others still view marijuana, like alcohol, as a largely harmless indulgence, dangerous only when used immoderately. All sides of the debate have appropriated the scientific evidence on marijuana to satisfy their claims. What then are we to make of these conflicting portrayals of a drug with historical origins dating back to 8,000 B.C.? Understanding Marijuana examines the biological, psychological, and societal impact of this controversial substance. What are the effects, for mind and body, of long-term use? Are smokers of marijuana more likely than non-users to abuse cocaine and heroine? What effect has the increasing potency of marijuana in recent years had on users and on use? Does our current legal policy toward marijuana make sense? Earleywine separates science from opinion to show how marijuana defies easy dichotomies. Tracing the medical and political debates surrounding marijuana in a balanced, objective fashion, this book will be the definitive primer on our most controversial and widely used illicit substance.

The book explores both the clinical presentation of serious diabetic emergencies (like ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar coma, and severe hyper and hypoglycemia) that consultants and hospital staff encounter in practice and the best methods of both managing the emergencies and also administering follow-up guidance/care. All chapters are clearly structured to highlight: definition of emergency; epidemiology; potential causes, diagnosis, clinical management (including problem areas), follow-up management/care; and patient advice. There are case studies to aid clinical understanding, as well as 5-7 multiple choice questions and several key points/take-home message boxes in every chapter.

Precision Heart Rate Training

$12.88

The athlete looking to fine-tune performance will find a wealth of practical training tools in PRECISION HEART RATE TRAINING. Editor Edmund R. Burke, a Ph.D. in exercise physiology whose credits include training an Olympic cycling team, begins this helpful guide with his own explanation of heart rate monitoring and the use of wireless heart rate monitors. Burke explains what athletes can expect to learn from monitoring their own heart rates and how to incorporate this information into their workout plans. He then presents a collection of sport-specific instructions from other fitness experts, who discuss the use of monitors in activities including walking, running, cycling, in-line skating, and group exercise (such as aerobics classes). PRECISION HEART RATE TRAINING finishes with a chapter on monitoring the training effect, which rounds out this fact-filled, informative handbook with methods for continuing to incorporate heart rate monitoring and training into any long-term exercise program.

Heart Rate and Rhythm (Hardcover)

Heart Rate and Rhythm (Hardcover)

$233.69

Pathological heart rhythms are a major health issue. In this book experts from various fields provide an important context for understanding the complicated molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie normal and pathophysiological cardiac rhythms.Individual chapters cover a full range of topics, including the ionic basis of pacemaking, the role of specific channels and transporters in sinoatrial node pacemaking, altered intracellular Ca2+ handling in response to disease, computer modeling of the action potentials of pacemaker and working cardiomyocytes, genetic and molecular basis of inherited arrhythmias and a review of established and novel antiarrhythmic agents. Due to the key importance of the specialized pacemaker cells and tissue (sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes) in maintaining heart rate and rhythm, special emphasis is placed on the peculiar electrophysiology of these cells.
